One of the big questions on a lot of peoples minds is, "Will the United States Mint be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand for American Silver Eagle bullion coins?" That's because the Mint has ceased production in the past and there's a chance they will do it again. Read this article to find out why - and how you can profit from it.

Silver American Eagle Sales Soar to an All Time High

As of March 4, 2010, 4.8 million US Silver Eagle coins had been sold by the US Mint since the beginning to the year. The sheer volume of coins sold represents the largest cumulative sales of coins in the history of the Mint.

So many coins were produced that one hundred percent of the all the silver that was mined in the United States during the previous two months were depleted. A number of investment advisors predict that this heightened retail interest in silver will cause the price of this precious metal to move significantly higher before the year's end.

Many people who are buying silver as a hedge against inflation are concerned that the Mint will not be able to keep up with the demand because it has suspended sales to authorized dealers in the past.

A History of Suspended American Silver Eagles Sales

In March 2008 sales of silver eagles had increased from 200,000 in February to 1,855,000. As a result of this greater than nine fold increase, the US Mint began to ration Silver Eagle bullion coins to authorized dealers in April 2008.

Two months later, in June 2008, the Mint announced that all of the incoming silver planchets would be used to mint bullion coins rather than a combination of bullion, proof and uncirculated coins. As a result the 2008 Proof Silver Eagle was unavailable from the Mint as of August of that year. Perhaps that is why 2008 Proof Silver Eagles are now selling for a premium of 25% to 40% or more than the 2007 Proof Silver Eagles.

Then, on the fifth of March, 2009 the Mint announced that both uncirculated as well as proof versions of the Silver Eagles would be suspended, at least temporarily, because of the continued high demand for the bullion coins.

Finally, the allocation program that was initiated in March 2008 was lifted in mid June 2009. Although some people believed that production of the proof and uncirculated coins would also resume it was not meant to be. The Mint announced, on October 6, 2009, that collectible versions of Silver Eagle coins wouldn't be minted for 2009.

Subsequently the sale of the 2009 bullion coins was once again suspended between November 24th and December 6th. Although the allocation program was once again instituted on December 7, 2009, the remaining bullion coins were completed sold out by January 12, 2010.

The 2010 Silver Eagle bullion coins started being produced a month behind the usual schedule, in January 2010. At this point in time it isn't known whether the uncirculated or the proof versions of these coins will be produced this year.

That's probably why a lot of people who have thought about buying silver are stepping up to the plate and purchasing it now, while they feel the price is still reasonably low.
